Concert Hall · Manchester
A charity-run live music venue in Manchester's Northern Quarter
The name is literal. In the building's early days, musicians performed on a stage built high on the back wall of the room. Today Band on the Wall stands at 25 Swan Street in Manchester's Northern Quarter. It has been at the heart of the city's musical life for more than 50 years, from hosting jazz legends to helping shape the post-punk scene.
The ground has its own history. The venue sits in the old market district, by the former gathering place of New Cross, a site of many demonstrations during the Industrial Revolution. The area hosted the printers of the original Broadsides. It is where Marx and Engels drank, and where successive waves of immigrants settled. The venue's heritage page describes the music as a continuation of the same tradition of celebrating human endeavour that has taken place here for hundreds of years.
Since 1984 the venue has been owned and operated by the registered charity Inner City Music, on a not-for-profit basis. Its stated aim is to showcase jazz, folk, reggae, soul, latin, afro, funk, blues and other traditional and cultural music from across the world. It programmes hundreds of concerts a year and was named Inspirational Venue of the Year (Under 2,000 Capacity) in 2024.
The World of Music programme fills the rest of the week. Tuesdays bring a Gospel and Soul Choir and a Folk and World Choir. On Wednesdays there is a yoga class from 7:45 to 8:30 in the morning, followed by the Golden Voices choir for people over 50. Fridays are for babies and toddlers, and Saturdays for young musicians. In the evenings, the Beat the Jams series puts live jazz on stage from 6pm for the after-work crowd. Next door, The Copper Bar is an NYC-inspired cocktail bar with its own second stage and free live music every Saturday. The venue has level access throughout the bar and main room, and a platform lift to the stage.
