Kalaripayattu Retreat Centre · Kozhikode, Kerala
#Kalaripayattu
Kalari Kendram is a traditional residential Gurukulam dedicated to preserving, practicing, and promoting Kalaripayattu, one of India's oldest martial arts, originating in Kerala. Founded in 2000 in Kozhikode under the guidance of Gurukkal Shinto Mathew, the institution has expanded to centres in Kozhikode, Delhi, and Noida. In 2025, Kalari Kendram established its main residential Gurukulam in Narinada, Kerala, bringing its journey back to its roots. Surrounded by greenery, trees, and nature, the Gurukulam provides an immersive environment for traditional martial arts training, cultural learning, and personal development.
Kalari Kendram is committed to preserving the authentic traditions of Kalaripayattu while sharing its knowledge with students across India and around the world. Its programs include residential Kalaripayattu training, regular classes, teacher training, fitness and wellness, self-defense, Kalari massage, workshops, and cultural demonstrations. Through meypayattu, body conditioning, traditional techniques, and weapon training, students develop strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, concentration, and self-control while cultivating discipline, perseverance, confidence, and respect for their teacher and cultural heritage.
Residential life combines structured training with traditional games, artistic activities, meditation, and opportunities to connect with nature. Accommodation includes shared and private room options, bathroom facilities, common areas, and recreational spaces. Traditional Kerala meals are available, including vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. The Gurukulam encourages students to immerse themselves in the practice, develop consistency, and experience a way of learning shaped by tradition, community, and respect.
Under the leadership of Gurukkal Shinto Mathew, Kalari Kendram has represented Kalaripayattu at national and international cultural events, martial arts festivals, educational programs, and international exchanges. Its achievements reflect a continued commitment to sharing Kerala's traditional martial art with diverse audiences and preserving its cultural heritage.
