A 22-room wellness retreat on Bundjalung Country, Byron Bay hinterland, NSW
Gaia Retreat & Spa stands on the highest point of the Shire, in the Bundjalung Country hinterland of Byron Bay. The retreat describes its energy as linked to the ancient spirit and songlines beneath the land. Its sunrises and sunsets are watched from Samira Lookout, a name the retreat translates as "wind of God and breeze".
The centre of the property is Kukura House, a contemporary Samoan-style longhouse with soaring ceilings, natural wood and soft flowing fabrics. Kukura, the retreat says, means "people" in ancient Sanskrit. Guests dine, read, play board games and drink herbal tea here, and the house also holds reception, a library and the Gaia Shop. The retreat's own phrase for the style is "Barefoot meets Armani".
Samadhi Yoga Studio looks out over rolling hills and ancient trees. It offers yoga, meditation and breathwork for beginners and long-time practitioners alike, with each teacher bringing a different style. The rotating daily program also includes Qi Gong, cacao ceremony, sound healing with Tibetan and crystal singing bowls, nature weaving with fibres from the property, forage tours, cooking classes and firepit gatherings. Every stay opens with a one-on-one Wellness Orientation.
Food follows what the retreat calls its Paddock to Plate practice, drawing on its organic garden and Northern Rivers farmers. Breakfast, lunch, a three-course dinner and snacks are included, along with a magnesium pool, hot rock sauna, tennis court and e-bikes. The garden now grows spray-free seasonal flowers, such as dahlias, sunflowers and zinnias, and keeps resident bees.
The retreat has welcomed guests for over twenty years, and its 22 rooms, suites and villas are priced all-inclusive. It will close temporarily on 30 November for a significant redevelopment.
