Improvised Live Electronic Music:Channeling Energy Through Sound

Mose and Janax Pacha performed a fully improvised live electronic set at Es Vedra, Ibiza on September 20, 2021, aligned with the full moon equinox. Using a collection of pre-recorded loops as raw material, the two musicians communicated minimally (only to establish key and tempo) and instead relied on feeling, intuition, and real-time listening to weave tracks together. The performance demonstrates how electronic musicians can function as channels rather than executors—letting the energetic properties of a location and the present moment guide what emerges aurally. The result was a 1 hour 25-minute set that left performers and audience members in a state of deep presence.

What Is Improvised Loop-Based Electronic Music?

Traditional electronic music production relies on pre-composition: songs are arranged in a studio, written down in a DAW, and then performed exactly as written. Mose's approach inverts this workflow. Rather than composing complete tracks beforehand, he maintains a library of loops—short, repeating audio segments that function as the building blocks of sound. A loop might be a vocal phrase, a drum pattern, a melodic line, or a textural element.

During a performance, Mose and Janax Pacha activate these loops in real-time, layering, removing, and modulating them based on what they sense in the moment. The only predetermined elements are the foundational musical parameters: key (the harmonic center of a track) and BPM (tempo). Everything else—which loops activate, how long they sustain, when they drop out, what emotional arc the music traces—emerges through listening and intuitive agreement between the two musicians.

This method sits between composition and pure improvisation. It is not jazz-style freestyling where musicians generate new melodies from scratch. Rather, it is a form of curation in real-time: choosing from a palette of pre-made elements and arranging them according to the unfolding energy of the present moment.

How Do Two Musicians Improvise Together Without Conversation?

A central challenge of group improvisation is alignment: how do multiple people make coherent artistic decisions simultaneously? The traditional answer is verbal or gestural communication—one musician signals to the others what comes next.

Mose and Janax Pacha minimize this overhead. They establish the key and tempo of a track through direct conversation (a few words or hand signals), then transition into what Mose calls "feeling the vibes." In this mode, musical communication replaces verbal communication. One musician introduces a loop or shifts the energy; the other listens and responds by activating complementary layers or adjusting their own contribution.

This requires a high degree of musical sensitivity and trust. Each performer must be attuned not just to their own part but to the larger soundscape unfolding. They listen for openings—moments when a new texture is needed—and gaps where simplification serves better than addition. The result is a conversation in sound, where the language is rhythm, melody, timbre, and space.

What Role Does Location and Energy Play in a Performance?

The set was filmed at Es Vedra, a rocky island off the coast of Ibiza. According to local mythology and contemporary spiritual discourse, Es Vedra is considered one of the "most potent vortex points on the earth"—a location where earth's electromagnetic or energetic properties are believed to be heightened. Mose also timed the recording to coincide with the full moon equinox, a moment when lunar and solar cycles align.

The combination of these factors—a purportedly powerful geographical location and a cosmically significant date—frames the performance as more than entertainment. Mose describes the experience: "When we finished I felt like I was journeying with an entheogenic substance. This for me is a beautiful sign that we journeyed to deep places." This suggests that he experienced the performance as a form of consciousness exploration, comparable to the states induced by psychoactive substances.

Whether or not one accepts the metaphysics of vortex sites, the set highlights how space and atmosphere influence music-making. A musician performing in a cathedral sounds different than one in a warehouse—not just because of acoustics, but because the symbolic weight and energetic felt-sense of a place shapes the performer's intention and presence. Mose's framing suggests that by tuning into the "energy" of Es Vedra and the equinox moment, he and Janax Pacha allowed those qualities to inform their choices, resulting in a distinctive sonic character.

What Is the "Channeling" Model of Musicianship?

Mose describes the musicians as "channels for something meaningful." This language appears across contemplative traditions: the idea that an artist is not the generator of meaning but rather a vessel through which something larger flows. The composer does not create; the composer receives and transmits.

In this model, the performer's role is to get out of the way. Rather than imposing a predetermined vision, the musician quiets ego and intent, becoming attuned to what "wants to come through." This requires surrender and trust—trust that by listening deeply and responding authentically in the moment, coherent meaning will emerge without needing to be controlled.

This is radically different from the standard view of musical expertise, which emphasizes technical mastery and interpretive choice. Here, mastery becomes the ability to listen, to stay present, and to respond with intuitive alignment. The hardest part is not playing the notes; it is clearing oneself enough to hear what the moment is asking for.

How Does a Loop-Based Set Differ From a DJ Set?

On the surface, both DJs and loop-based performers work with pre-recorded audio, responding to a crowd's energy and shifting energy accordingly. But the underlying logic differs significantly.

A DJ selects songs (usually complete, commercially released tracks) and transitions between them—mixing their beats, creating mashups, or riding the energy of crowd response. The DJ's task is curation and sequencing of finished works.

Mose's approach works with raw material: loops, not songs. Each set builds entire tracks from scratch, layering loops into configurations that may never be heard the same way twice. The performers are not selecting from a catalog of finished products but assembling a unique artifact in real-time. It is closer to live instrumental improvisation than to DJing, except that the "instruments" are banks of loops rather than acoustic instruments.

This also means that neither Mose nor the listener can predict what will happen. The set is truly unrehearsed. There is no set list to reference. The only anchors are the available loops and the intuitive choices made moment-to-moment.

What Happens When Musicians Prioritize Listening Over Planning?

The description states that Mose and Janax Pacha had "no plan for which songs to explore and just did your best to tune in and listen to what wanted to come through." This signals a deliberate inversion of the usual music-making process, where planning precedes execution.

The advantage of this approach is freshness and presence. Each moment is genuinely alive because neither musician knows what comes next. This prevents the staleness that can occur when a performance is entirely scripted. The performers remain responsive, and the audience (however large or small) witnesses something being born rather than something being reproduced.

The disadvantage is unpredictability and potential incoherence. Without a plan, a set could collapse into noise or meander aimlessly. That Mose and Janax Pacha avoided these pitfalls suggests either deep musical intuition, prior rehearsal and rapport that made non-verbal coordination seamless, or a combination of both. The results indicate that the methodology is viable—that music can indeed emerge from pure listening if the musicians involved have sufficient skill and trust.

Where to go from here

This live set offers several entry points for deeper exploration. If you are interested in improvisation, consider learning how intuitive communication works between musicians—watch videos of free jazz ensembles like those led by Ornette Coleman, or study ensemble improvisation in traditions like Indian classical music, where the sitar and tabla player communicate through subtle musical gestures rather than predetermined arrangements.

If you are drawn to the role of location and energy in creative work, research the concept of place-based creation: how contemporary artists and musicians deliberately choose or create environments that support their intended work. This is not mystical—it is simply recognizing that environment shapes consciousness, and conscious creators shape environment.

If you want to experiment with loop-based music yourself, start with simple loop apps or software like Ableton Live (used by many electronic musicians) and create 3-4 simple loops, then practice layering and removing them based on intuitive feel rather than a written plan. The skill lies in listening to whether each addition serves the whole or clutters it.

Finally, consider the broader claim implicit in Mose's work: that music can be a form of consciousness exploration and healing. If this resonates, explore the genre of psychoacoustic music, ambient music designed for meditation, and the growing field of music therapy, where sound is explicitly used as a healing modality.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

A loop is a short, repeating audio segment—such as a drum beat, vocal phrase, or melodic line—that can be activated and deactivated in real-time. Live loop-based performers layer multiple loops together to build tracks from scratch during a performance, rather than playing pre-recorded songs. The musician controls which loops play, when they enter and exit, and how they interact, allowing for spontaneous arrangement and responsiveness to the moment.
They establish foundational parameters (key and tempo) through brief communication, then shift into intuitive listening. Each performer pays close attention to what the other is introducing and responds by adding complementary elements, removing layers that feel unnecessary, or modulating the energy. This requires musical sensitivity and trust—each person listens not just to their own part but to the larger soundscape and adjusts their contribution accordingly.
Yes. The atmosphere and symbolic weight of a place—especially one considered energetically significant, like Es Vedra—can influence a performer's intention and intuitive choices. Similarly, cosmic timing (like a full moon equinox) may heighten a performer's presence and sensitivity. While the mechanism is debated, empirically musicians report that certain locations and moments produce distinctive sonic and energetic results.
Rather than imposing a predetermined artistic vision, the musician quiets ego and control, becoming attuned to what the moment seems to call for. The performer's role shifts from 'generator of meaning' to 'transmitter of meaning'—trusting that by staying present and responding authentically, coherent music will emerge without needing to be consciously controlled.
DJs select and mix complete, finished songs. Loop-based performers assemble entire tracks from raw audio building blocks (loops) in real-time, creating unique configurations that may never be replicated. It is closer to live instrumental improvisation than curation of existing works, since the performers are generating novel music rather than sequencing released tracks.
According to accounts like Mose's, yes—when the conditions are right. A combination of sincere musical intention, expert performance, sensitive listening between musicians, and a potent environment can produce profound states of consciousness. This aligns with research on music's capacity to alter brain states and induce experiences of transcendence or unity.
